The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program focuses on all the things every puppy and owner need to have a great start together.

STAR stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and a Responsible owner.

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy prepares pups to move on to Canine Good Citizen training. For example, in STAR, puppies must walk on a leash in a straight line. In CGC, the task becomes more advanced with dogs walking in a pattern that includes right and left turns and stops.

The skills in AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy classes are practical and functional. Teaching puppies to tolerate grooming, handling, and basic exams of the ears, feet, and mouth will result in well-mannered puppies that veterinarians are happy to see.

Scentwork

Additional Covid-19 Outdoor Scent work Class Guidelines

The Instructor will handle all materials for each dog.

Container searches – In order to reduce the number of people in the search area, designate someone to handle boxes and wear gloves.

Handlers should keep their dog’s leash during off leash searches.

Scented articles of the handler should be placed in a sealed plastic bag and handled with gloves.

The sport of Scent Work is based on the work of professional detection dogs (such as drug dogs), employed by humans to detect a wide variety of scents and substances. In AKC Scent Work, dogs search for cotton swabs saturated with the essential oils of Birch, Anise, Clove, and Cypress. The cotton swabs are hidden out of sight in a pre-determined search area, and the dog has to find them. Teamwork is necessary: when the dog finds the scent, he has to communicate the find to the handler.  This is an introductory course for beginner dogs and owners.

Intermediate Scent Work will continue to build upon skills learned in the Beginner Scent Work Class. The goal of this class will be to build odor importance for the dog and begin to introduce new search elements that might be encountered at the Novice Trial level. Dogs must at least be on birch and must be crated between searches.

Tracking Classes

Additional Covid-19 Outdoor Tracking Class Guidelines

Instructors and handlers should maintain social distancing and may wear masks. Instructors and tracklayers should use their own equipment. One person should be designated to handle the tracking flags for each track. If the flags will be handled by two different people for each track, one on the day of plotting and another on the day of laying the track, the flags should be wiped down after being staked.

Articles: All tracklayers are advised to wear gloves while handling the articles that will be
dropped on each of the track(s). A new pair of gloves should be used for each set of articles.
Researchers have stated the virus can live on plastic and metal for as long as 7 days, and various
cloth materials for as long as 2-3 days. Clubs are advised to provide unused and sealed articles
for each track.

Tracking is a sport where dogs are trained by bringing out their natural ability to recognize and follow human scent. Dogs possess an extremely high level of scent capability and owners who do tracking with their dogs find joy in seeing the dogs at work using their innate scenting skills.

Agility Classes

Agility classes are also offered on a regular basis. Dog agility is a sport in which a handler is given a set amount of time in which to direct a dog through a series of obstacles, which include tunnels, jumps, see-saw, A-frame, dog-walk, tire jump and weave poles. Agility is an exciting fast-paced sport, which requires a confident dog that can focus on its handler's instructions.

For the safety of growing puppies, dogs less than 12 month of age will not be able to participate in some activities in classes beyond Foundations Levels 1 and 2.

Additional Covid-19 Agility guidelines
Wear gloves when resetting jump bars.
Wear gloves when moving equipment.
Disinfect equipment after each class.

Intermediate Agility is designed for dogs who have completed Beginning Agility and are comfortable with the agility equipment. Emphasis will be on simple sequencing and on basic handling techniques.

Advanced Intermediate puts emphasis on reviewing and reinforcing skills learned in Intermediate for both handler and dogs. Sequences will be more challenging with the goal of moving to actual competition level.
